Before traveling to Oceania

Traveling to Oceania offers great contrasts - from the modern cities of Australia and New Zealand to Pacific island paradises with crystal-clear waters and unique cultures. At the same time, there are diseases and infections that are uncommon in Sweden, which you may need protection against. The recommended vaccinations depend on which country you're visiting, how long you'll stay, and the type of trip you're planning.

Recommended vaccinations and protection

For many destinations in Oceania, it's recommended to review your basic immunisations - meaning vaccines against tetanus, diphtheria, and polio. Hepatitis A is also commonly recommended, even for shorter trips. For longer stays or travel to areas with lower hygiene standards, vaccinations against hepatitis B and typhoid may also be relevant.
In some parts of Oceania, there is a risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika virus, and Japanese encephalitis. Therefore, both mosquito protection and vaccination may be needed. Always use insect repellent, wear covering clothing, and sleep under insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
