Influenza is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads rapidly during the winter season and can cause high fever, muscle aches, and serious complications – especially in older adults and people in risk groups. The high-dose influenza vaccine provides stronger and more effective protection and is specifically designed for people aged 60 and older. As the immune system weakens with age, the high-dose vaccine contains four times more antigen than the standard vaccine, helping the body develop a stronger immune response against the influenza virus. Studies show that the high-dose vaccine can provide approximately 25% better protection against influenza compared to the regular vaccine.

Why It’s Important to Get the High-Dose Influenza Vaccine
Influenza can cause severe illness in older adults, as the immune system weakens with age. The high-dose vaccine provides stronger and more effective protection than the standard flu vaccine - and reduces the risk of serious illness, need for medical care, and death.
Serious Complications May Occur
Influenza can lead to pneumonia, worsening of chronic conditions, and other complications. For older adults, the infection can be particularly severe, and the high-dose vaccine offers better protection against these outcomes.
Enhanced Protection for Older Adults
The high-dose vaccine contains a higher amount of antigen, which stimulates the immune system more effectively. This gives older adults stronger and longer-lasting protection against the influenza virus.

When Should You Get Vaccinated?
The best time to get vaccinated is before the flu season starts – usually in October or when the vaccination campaigns begin. Even if you get vaccinated later in the season, it still provides valuable protection, as immunity develops within about a week after vaccination.
Vaccination Schedule
The high-dose vaccine is given as one injection per season. Protection lasts for about one year and should be repeated before each flu season to maintain strong protection. One dose per year is sufficient for most people.
By getting vaccinated, you not only protect yourself - you also reduce the risk of spreading the infection to people around you, such as older adults, children, and individuals with chronic conditions.
Free Vaccination for Risk Groups
In Region Stockholm, Uppsala, and Västmanland, free influenza vaccination is offered to the regions’ defined risk groups. At VaccinDirekt, the high-dose vaccine is available for those who want stronger protection ahead of the season.
