Hepatitis A is a liver infection spread through food, drink, or water contaminated with the virus. The disease is common in many parts of the world and can cause fever, fatigue, nausea, and jaundice. The hepatitis A vaccine provides effective and long-lasting protection. Vaccination is recommended before traveling to higher-risk areas such as Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Central and South America, and certain parts of Eastern Europe.

How the vaccination works
At VaccinDirekt, we offer proven and effective vaccines against hepatitis A, which can be given from the age of 1. The vaccination consists of two doses given at least six months apart – one dose provides good protection for your trip, while two doses offer long-lasting protection for about 40 years. If you also wish to be vaccinated against hepatitis B, a combined vaccine is available. Three doses provide at least 30 years of protection against hepatitis A and lifelong protection against hepatitis B.
Who should get vaccinated against hepatitis A?
Anyone traveling to areas where hepatitis A is common, especially low- and middle-income countries.
Travelers visiting rural areas where drinking water may be unsafe.
People who want extra protection even when the risk of infection is low, for example when staying at hotels or restaurants of higher standard.
The vaccine is not recommended for
Children under 1 year of age (the hepatitis A vaccine is given from 1 year and up).
People with a known allergy to a component of the vaccine.
If you have a serious ongoing illness or infection – it may be best to wait until you have recovered.
You are always welcome to consult our nurses for personal advice.
Vaccination schedule
The vaccine is given in two doses at least 6 months apart for full protection. If there is only time for one dose before traveling, it still provides good protection during the trip. After the second dose, protection is expected to last for about 40 years.
When should you get vaccinated?
Plan your vaccination well in advance of your trip to allow time for both doses.
If you realize you need the vaccine shortly before departure, one dose can still provide protection, but two doses are better.
Remember to follow hygiene precautions even after vaccination for maximum protection.
Why it’s important to get vaccinated against hepatitis A
Hepatitis A can cause prolonged and troublesome symptoms, and infection may occur even under relatively good hygiene conditions. Getting vaccinated at VaccinDirekt not only gives you peace of mind – it also spares you from wasted vacation time and discomfort.
Symptoms can be prolonged and severe
Many people experience fever, nausea, stomach pain, and sometimes jaundice and extreme fatigue that may last for several weeks—or even months.
Transmission routes are wide and unexpected
Even food or water that looks clean can be contaminated. Vaccination protects against infections you might not consider – for example through imported products or poor food and water hygiene.
One dose is enough for travel needs
If you get at least one dose before your trip, you will have strong protection – perfect if you book your journey last-minute but still want to avoid the risk.
The benefits outweigh the risk – even when it’s low
Even if you’re traveling to areas with a lower risk, a single case could drastically affect your trip. Vaccination protects you both from illness and from having your holiday ruined.
