Protection against malaria
Malaria is a serious, sometimes life-threatening disease transmitted by mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease is caused by parasites spread by the Anopheles mosquito and occurs in large parts of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and South America. There is no vaccine that provides complete protection against malaria for travellers, but the risk of illness can be significantly reduced by taking malaria prophylaxis – preventive medication that protects against infection. At VaccinDirekt, we help you choose the right prophylaxis for your trip and provide clear guidance on how and when to take the medication for optimal protection. Welcome to us for travel health advice.

How malaria prophylaxis works
Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for travellers to areas where malaria is present. The medication is taken before, during, and after travel and prevents the parasite from developing in the body. At VaccinDirekt, we help you determine which medication is most suitable for your destination and how to take it to ensure full protection.
Who should take malaria prophylaxis?
- Travellers visiting areas with a high risk of malaria
- Travellers staying for longer periods in risk areas or rural locations
- Children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems – these groups are at higher risk of severe illness
Malaria prophylaxis is not recommended for:
- Individuals with contraindications to the prescribed medication
- Individuals who have experienced severe side effects from the same medication previously
- Pregnant women should consult healthcare professionals before starting prophylaxis
When should you start taking malaria prophylaxis?
Start well in advance of your trip. Some medications must be started 1–3 weeks before departure, while others begin 1–2 days before travel. Treatment continues throughout your stay in the risk area and 1–4 weeks after returning home, depending on the medication used.Treatment schedule
- Start: 1–21 days before departure (depending on medication)
- During travel: Take tablets according to the prescribed schedule
- After return: Continue for 1–4 weeks as prescribed

Why protection against malaria is important
Malaria is one of the world’s most widespread and serious mosquito-borne diseases. For travellers to risk areas, malaria prophylaxis is the most effective way to reduce the risk of illness. At VaccinDirekt, you receive reliable advice and prescriptions for the right protection before your trip.
Malaria – a serious parasitic disease
Malaria is spread by mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease is caused by parasites transmitted by the Anopheles mosquito and occurs in more than 100 countries. Hundreds of millions of cases are reported globally each year, and without protection, even short stays can lead to infection.Prophylaxis is the only reliable protection
There is no vaccine that provides complete protection against malaria, and it is impossible to fully avoid mosquito bites. Preventive medication (malaria prophylaxis) is therefore the only reliable way to reduce the risk of illness. When taken as prescribed, it offers strong protection. When malaria becomes severe
Early symptoms often appear within a few weeks of infection and may resemble flu – including fever, chills, headache, and muscle aches. Without treatment, malaria can quickly become life-threatening and cause severe damage to organs and blood circulation. Many underestimate the risk
Many believe malaria only exists in remote parts of the world, but the disease is common in several popular travel destinations in Africa, Asia, and South America. Even short trips can involve risk. Starting malaria prophylaxis in time is therefore essential for safe travel. Why choose VaccinDirekt?
