Meningococcal bacteria can cause serious illnesses such as meningitis and sepsis, which can become life-threatening in a short time. The disease spreads through close contact, for example via coughing or saliva, and mainly affects children, adolescents, and young adults.Vaccination against meningococcal disease provides the best protection and is especially recommended before traveling to areas where the disease is common or for extended stays abroad.

How the Vaccination Works
At VaccinDirekt, we offer several meningococcal vaccines that protect against different groups of the bacteria. Which vaccine is suitable for you depends on your age, travel destination, and any specific risk factors. There are several vaccines that protect against one or more subgroups of meningococcal bacteria (A, B, C, W, and Y). Vaccines for groups A, C, W, and Y are usually given as a single dose from 1–2 years of age. Protection lasts for several years, but a booster dose may be needed. Vaccines for group B are typically given in two doses about a month apart. For young children, more doses are required.
Who Should Get Vaccinated?
People traveling or studying in countries where meningococcal infection is more common, e.g., certain parts of Africa, Asia, or South America.
Travelers to Saudi Arabia (e.g., for pilgrimage to Mecca), where vaccination is often required.
Adolescents and young adults, especially those living in student dormitories or serving in the military, where the risk of transmission is higher.
The Vaccine Is Not Recommended For:
People with a known allergy to any of the vaccine’s ingredients.
Individuals with acute illness or high fever; vaccination should be postponed.
Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult a doctor before vaccination.
You are always welcome to receive advice from our nurses.
When Should You Get Vaccinated?
It is important to get vaccinated well in advance of your trip to ensure good protection against meningococcal disease. Protection begins to develop after the first dose, but it takes up to 2–3 weeks for the body to develop an adequate immune response. Therefore, you should get vaccinated at least 3 weeks before departure.
Vaccination Schedule
Dose 1: Primary vaccination.
Dose 2: Booster may be needed after 5 years for continued protection (depending on the vaccine and age).
This is Why It’s Important to Get Vaccinated Against Meningococcal Disease
Meningococcal disease is rare but can develop very quickly. It is caused by bacteria that spread through close contact and can lead to meningitis or sepsis. Without prompt treatment, the disease can be life-threatening – which is why vaccination provides the best protection.
The Disease Can Strike Suddenly
Meningococcal infection can progress from mild symptoms to life-threatening conditions within just a few hours. Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of severe illness.
Serious Consequences – Even for Healthy Individuals
Unlike many other infections, meningococcal disease can affect completely healthy children, adolescents, and adults. The consequences can be fatal or result in lasting damage, such as hearing loss and neurological problems.
Increased Risk During Travel and in Crowded Environments
The risk of infection is higher in areas where meningococcal disease is more common, such as certain parts of Africa. Students, military personnel, or anyone in crowded environments are also at higher risk.
Don’t Wait to Get Vaccinated
Because the disease progresses so quickly, it is too late to vaccinate once the infection is near. Protect yourself in advance – the vaccine provides long-lasting and effective protection.
