How the vaccination works

At VaccinDirekt, we offer the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella. We help you review your protection, whether for children following the national vaccination schedule or for adults who need to update their immunizations. We have clinics with drop-in options as well as convenient online booking.

Who should get the MMR vaccine?

  • According to the national vaccination program, children receive the first dose at around 18 months of age and the second dose in grades 1-2 (around ages 7-8).
  • Adults who have not received two doses or are unsure if they are fully protected - especially before travel or after potential exposure.

The vaccine is not recommended for

  • Individuals with severely weakened immune systems or certain immune disorders where live vaccines are not suitable.
  • Pregnant women should not receive the rubella component during the first trimester unless there is an urgent need for protection – an individual assessment is required.
You are always welcome to consult our nurses for personal advice.

When should you get vaccinated?

The best approach is to follow the childhood vaccination schedule without interruption. If you’re an adult and unsure whether you’ve received two doses, check and complete your vaccination as soon as possible. There’s no such thing as “too late”; your protection improves with every dose.

Vaccination schedule

  • Normally, two doses are given: the first at around 18 months of age, and the second in grades 1–2 (around ages 7–8).
  • If needed - for example, before travel or if you’re unsure about your immunity - the first dose can be given earlier than usual. Please consult the clinic for advice.

Why it’s important to get vaccinated

Although many people think that measles, mumps, and rubella are things of the past, the risks remain, and these diseases can have serious consequences.Vaccination is the safest way to build strong protection for yourself and those around you.

Measles spreads easily and can be serious

Measles is highly contagious; one person can infect many others. Complications such as pneumonia, ear infections, and meningitis can occur, especially among young children and unvaccinated individuals.

Ongoing global risks through travel

In many countries, measles is still common, and outbreaks occur frequently. An unvaccinated person risks becoming infected while traveling abroad and may bring the infection back to Sweden.

Serious risks during pregnancy

Rubella can cause birth defects if a woman becomes infected early in pregnancy. That’s why vaccination before pregnancy is especially important.

Long-lasting protection with two doses

Two doses of the MMR vaccine provide very strong and long-lasting protection against all three diseases. Completing the full series greatly reduces the risk of infection.
