Shingles is a painful disease that affects about 1 in 3 people in Sweden. The risk increases from the age of 50, as the virus remains in the body after a previous chickenpox infection. The disease can cause severe pain, long periods of sick leave, rashes, and in some cases lasting complications. There is an effective shingles vaccine that reduces the risk of falling ill and of developing complications such as postherpetic neuralgia. The vaccine is well-proven and available at all our clinics and on the Fästingbussen (mobile vaccination bus)

Så går vaccinationen till

At VaccinDirekt, we offer the shingles vaccine to everyone aged 50 and above, as well as to individuals from 18 years of age with a weakened immune system. The vaccination is given in two doses, about two months apart (with the option to postpone the second dose up to 6 months if needed). The vaccine is available at all our clinics and on the Fästingbussen (mobile vaccination bus) – making it easy to book an appointment where it suits you.

Who should get vaccinated against shingles?

  • People aged 50 and older, especially those who have previously had chickenpox. The risk of shingles and complications increases with age.
  • People from the age of 18 with weakened immune systems (e.g., due to illness or medication) should also consider vaccination.

The vaccine is not recommended for:

  • Individuals allergic to any component of the vaccine.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to refrain from shingles vaccination.
  • Individuals who are seriously ill or have an active infection should wait until they have recovered before vaccination.
You are always welcome to consult our nurses for advice.

When should you get vaccinated?

The earlier you get vaccinated, the better – this ensures that both doses are given before any potential risk period or worsening factors. If you have recently had shingles, it is recommended to wait at least one year after the outbreak before vaccination for the best possible effect.

Vaccination schedule

Two doses are required for full protection:
  • First dose
  • Second dose: about 2 months later
If needed, the interval for the second dose can be extended to between 2 and 6 months.

Why it’s important to get vaccinated against shingles

Shingles can be very painful and affect your life for a long time. Getting vaccinated at VaccinDirekt reduces the risk of illness and serious complications, helping you avoid pain, sick leave, and troublesome rashes.

A common disease – risk increases with age

About 1 in 3 people in Sweden will experience shingles at some point in their lives. The risk increases significantly from the age of 50.

Complications can be long-lasting

Shingles can cause postherpetic neuralgia – intense nerve pain that may persist for months after the rash has disappeared. Vaccination helps prevent these complications.

Pain, rash, and sick leave

The rash often becomes fluid-filled and itchy, sometimes very painful. The illness itself can last a long time and affect everyday life and quality of life. With vaccination, both the risk of illness and the severity of the disease are reduced.

Don’t wait – protection requires two doses

For full protection, you need both doses. If you wait too long, you may have to postpone your vaccination, leaving you at risk in the meantime. Book in advance with VaccinDirekt to ensure full protection.
