Before traveling to Africa

Visiting Africa can be an incredible experience, offering unique nature, culture, and adventure. At the same time, some diseases are far more common than in Sweden, so it’s important to protect yourself before departure. Which vaccinations are recommended depends on the specific country you’re visiting, how long you’ll be staying, and the nature of your trip.

Recommended vaccinations and protection

For many destinations in Africa, it’s recommended to review your basic immunizations - meaning vaccines against tetanus, diphtheria, and polio. Hepatitis A is also commonly advised, even for shorter trips, as well as yellow fever, which is a requirement for entry into several countries.
For longer stays or travel to areas with lower hygiene standards, vaccinations against hepatitis B, typhoid, cholera, and meningococcal disease may also be relevant. In addition to vaccines, malaria protection is often necessary in the form of malaria prophylaxis. The choice of medication depends on your destination and the duration of your trip.
