Preparing for Travel to Central America

Central America offers tropical beaches, rainforests, volcanoes, and historic Mayan ruins. The region is rich in culture, nature, and unique experiences - but it also carries health risks from diseases not found in Sweden. Proper vaccinations and careful travel preparation are therefore essential parts of planning your trip.

Recommended vaccinations and protection

For travel to Central America, vaccination against hepatitis A, tetanus, and diphtheria is generally recommended. For longer stays or trips with lower hygiene standards, vaccinations against hepatitis B, typhoid, cholera, and rabies may also be relevant.
In some countries, a yellow fever certificate may be required, especially if you are arriving from areas where the disease occurs. There is also a risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika virus, and chikungunya in the region, making mosquito protection an important part of your travel preparations.
