Getting vaccinated against chikungunya is the only way to protect yourself from the disease. The chikungunya virus is spread by mosquitoes and can cause high fever, joint and muscle pain, which may sometimes become long-lasting.
The chikungunya vaccine is a live, attenuated vaccine approved for people between 12 and 64 years of age. It provides rapid and long-lasting protection with a single dose. After 3 years of follow-up, the vaccine efficacy was shown to be 96%. The need for revaccination has not yet been established since the vaccine is new, but live vaccines generally provide long-term immunological protection.

How the Vaccination Works

You should get vaccinated against chikungunya if you are planning to travel to areas where the disease occurs. The vaccine can be given from the age of 12 up to 64 years. Vaccination is the best protection against the disease if you are traveling to areas where chikungunya is present. At VaccinDirekt, we help you tailor your vaccination before your trip.

Who should get vaccinated?

  • Travelers to areas in Asia, Africa, Central and South America where chikungunya outbreaks are reported.
  • People spending longer periods in tropical areas with many mosquitoes.
  • Travelers with underlying health conditions that could make an infection more severe.

The vaccine is not recommended for:

  • People with immunodeficiency or who are immunosuppressed
  • People with known sensitivity to the active substance or excipients
  • People aged 65 or older
You are always welcome to receive advice from our nurses.

When should you get vaccinated?

Get vaccinated well in advance of your trip. Protection develops within about two weeks, so take the shot at least 2–3 weeks before departure. Ideally, book your appointment at least 6 weeks before – that way you’ll also have time for consultation and any other necessary travel vaccines.

Vaccination schedule

Already after the first dose, you get short-term protection for your trip. For longer and more lasting protection, two doses are recommended.Dose 1: Primary vaccinationDose 2: 1 month after the first dose (for long-term protection)

Why it is important to get vaccinated against chikungunya

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted by mosquito bites in tropical and subtropical areas. The illness can cause severe joint pain and long-lasting symptoms – and there is no curative treatment. Vaccination is the only way to protect yourself.

The disease can cause long-lasting joint pain

Chikungunya often causes high fever, headache, and intense pain in joints and muscles. For some, the pain can persist for months or even years, which is why the disease is sometimes compared to rheumatism.

Travelers often underestimate the risk

Many travelers focus on malaria or dengue but forget that chikungunya is spread just as widely by the same type of mosquitoes. Being vaccinated reduces worry during the trip and provides safer travel protection.

No cure – only preventive protection

There is no specific treatment for chikungunya. Symptoms can be relieved, but the disease must run its course. Vaccination is therefore the only effective way to prevent infection.

Don’t wait to get vaccinated

Since the disease can strike even during short trips, it is important to get vaccinated well in advance. The protection reduces the risk of illness and allows you to travel without worrying about painful consequences.
