Japanese encephalitis is a serious viral disease spread by mosquitoes in parts of Asia and the Pacific region. Most people who are infected experience mild or no symptoms, but in rare cases the disease can cause encephalitis with high fever, seizures, and a risk of lasting complications or even death. There is an effective vaccine against Japanese encephalitis that provides good protection and is recommended for travelers staying in risk areas.
Book an appointment through our website or visit us without one. You can find us at clinics across the country and on the Tick Buses during the season.

How the vaccination works
At VaccinDirekt, we offer vaccination against Japanese encephalitis for those planning to travel to Asia or the Western Pacific region – especially if you are staying in rural areas or traveling for an extended period. We provide guidance and ensure the vaccine is given on the correct schedule for optimal protection.
Who should get vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis?
Travelers to risk areas in Southeast Asia or the Western Pacific region where the disease occurs.
Those staying for long periods or frequently in rural areas, or close to places where animals and mosquitoes contribute to transmission.
The vaccine is not recommended for
Children under 2 months of age – the vaccine is given from 2 months and older.
People with a known allergy to any ingredient in the vaccine (a medical assessment may be required).
Those with an active, serious infection should wait until they have recovered before vaccination.
You are always welcome to consult our nurses for personal advice.
When should you get vaccinated?
As early as possible before your trip to complete the full vaccination schedule.
If you don’t have time for both primary doses, start the vaccination anyway – even one dose provides some early protection.
Vaccination schedule
The primary vaccination consists of two doses given about 4 weeks apart.
For adults in urgent need, an accelerated schedule may be possible.
After the second dose, it is recommended to wait at least one week before traveling to a risk area.
A third booster dose 1–2 years after the second dose can provide protection for around 10 years, with further boosters if exposure continues.
Why it’s important to get vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis
Japanese encephalitis is a serious disease that can cause encephalitis and permanent damage. Vaccination is the safest way to protect yourself before traveling – especially to areas where the disease is present and the risk of infection is high.
Risk of death and lasting damage
If the disease develops into encephalitis, the mortality rate can be as high as 30%, and among survivors, about 30–50% suffer from lasting neurological or cognitive damage.
Starts mild – becomes severe quickly
Many infected initially experience mild symptoms such as fever, headache, and nausea – but the disease can quickly escalate to seizures, paralysis, or loss of consciousness.
Travel and rural stays increase the risk
The highest risk is in rural areas where mosquito-borne transmission from animals occurs, especially during seasons of high mosquito activity. For those staying long-term or frequently in such environments, the risk is significant.
Vaccination is the only effective protection
Since there is no specific treatment for Japanese encephalitis, vaccination is the only way to avoid its serious consequences. With the right vaccination at the right time, you can travel with greater peace of mind.
