How the vaccination works
At VaccinDirekt, we offer vaccines against TBE – tick-borne encephalitis – with advice, selection of the appropriate vaccination schedule and correct dosage so that you are protected for tick season.
Who should get vaccinated against TBE?
Anyone who stays in risk areas where TBE-infected ticks are found, such as coastal and lakeside areas and damp areas.
Children from 1 year of age and up.
People 50 years and older, or with a compromised immune system – they use a slightly faster schedule.
The vaccine is not recommended for
People with a known allergic condition to any component of the vaccine.
Those with active, severe infection should wait until recovery before vaccination. (Medical assessment may be required.)
You are always welcome to receive advice from our nurses.
When should you get vaccinated?
It is important to get vaccinated well in advance of the tick season – so that the entire basic vaccination schedule has time to be followed and protection is established. If time is short, start the vaccination anyway, but protection is best if the doses have been given according to schedule.
Vaccination schedule
For people aged 1-49: Three doses within the first year – dose 2 one month after dose 1, dose 3 five to twelve months after dose 2. Then a booster dose 3 years after dose 3 and then every five years. For 50+ or weakened immune systems: Dose 2 is taken one month after dose 1, dose 3 two months after dose 2, fourth dose 5-12 months after dose 3, and then booster dose every five years.
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) can lead to serious brain and meningitis, and many sufferers experience lasting problems such as fatigue, balance problems or brain dysfunction. Vaccination is the best way to prevent this.
Record number of TBE cases - make sure you are protected
The number of cases of TBE continues to increase and is now at record levels. At the same time, ticks are spreading to new parts of the country and after mild winters, ticks can be active all year round. This means that the risk of TBE extends far beyond the classic tick season.
1 in 3 Swedes is not vaccinated against TBE
TBE is spreading and yet one in three Swedes (34%) lacks complete protection against it and over half (53 percent) lack adequate protection according to a survey from VaccinDirekt (link survey). Vaccination is more important than ever - don't hesitate, book your appointment today and protect yourself, your family and your friends.
The season and risk areas are expanding
TBE infection is now found in a larger geographical area than before, and ticks are active already when the temperature reaches a few degrees above zero, especially between March and November.
Protection builds over time – don’t wait
Protection from the TBE vaccine requires that you follow the entire vaccination schedule. If you start too late, you risk being unprotected when the risk is greatest.
