Before traveling to North America

Traveling to North America offers great variety - from Canada's vast nature and the bustling cities of the United States to the tropical beaches of the Caribbean and Mexico. Regardless of your destination, it's important to review your vaccinations before your trip. Diseases that are no longer common in Sweden can still occur in some parts of North America, especially in areas with lower hygiene standards or tropical climates.Which vaccinations are recommended depends on the country you're visiting, the length of your stay, and the type of trip you're planning.

Recommended vaccinations and protection

For travel to North America, it's recommended to keep your basic vaccinations up to date - meaning protection against tetanus, diphtheria, and polio. Hepatitis A is also commonly advised, especially when travelling to Mexico or the Caribbean.
For longer stays, travel to rural areas, or destinations with higher infection risks, vaccinations against hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, or cholera may also be relevant. For some destinations in Central America and the Caribbean, malaria prophylaxis may be necessary.
