There are over a hundred different types of HPV, human papillomaviruses. Some of these HPV viruses can cause genital warts, also called condyloma, while others can cause cell changes that can lead to cancer in the lower abdomen, mouth and anal region. It can take a long time, sometimes even decades, from the infection to cell changes that can lead to cancer.

How is HPV transmitted?

HPV is Sweden’s most common sexually transmitted disease. HPV is transmitted through skin and mucous membrane contact. Most people who are sexually active have or have had an HPV infection. By vaccinating yourself, you can prevent yourself from a number of different HPV virus variants that can lead to cancer and you also get protection against condyloma.
